Excellence is a Pursuit. In Mark’s gospel, we learn of a wealthy young man who approached Jesus asking what he should do to inherit eternal life. When he referred to Jesus as “good teacher,” this is how Jesus responded, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone” (Mark 10:18). In other words, God alone is our standard for good, and when it comes to His standard, all humanity has fallen short.
Let’s consider the standard of God’s goodness as we continue our online series on Shared Values. I’ve been sharing the values that I hope we will all share based on the word “GOSPEL.” The “G” stands for growing in Christ, “O” for outward focus, “S” for Spirit empowered, “P” for putting people ahead of programs, and “E,” for the pursuit of excellence.
When it comes to defining excellence, who sets the standard? In the beginning of creation, it was God alone who defined what was good. You will recall that when God saw all that He had made, it was “very good” (Gen. 1:31). Trouble came, however, when human beings began trying to define their own good.
We’ve been in trouble ever since, for all have fallen short of the glory of God. Yet, by His grace and Spirit, there is hope for our goodness. In fact, God gives us this command to “be holy in all you do” “because He is holy” (1 Pet. 1:16). This kind of excellence is a high standard that we pursue as we are pursuing Him. It is all about faithfulness to Him, but remember that He is worthy. Let’s give God our best as He empowers our pursuit! -Jason
